Chapter 24

Cameron

I don’t know what I expected a Pakistani wedding to look like, but this is so different from an American wedding.

For starters, everything is colorful. The table decor consists of lanterns with vibrant accents and various patterns, and bright drapes adorn several areas of the room. There’s a small platform at the head of the dance floor with a long white couch on it and surrounded by a backdrop of perfectly picked flowers.

The lighting overhead has a purple hue to it that you’d think would clash with all the teal, gold, and oranges but really doesn’t. Somehow every different color compliments the others beautifully.

Sayeed never shows any indication that he or his family are well off, but tonight is different. One night stay in this hotel alone would for sure cost me an entire two weeks paycheck. And the amount of jewels and other gold adornments worn by most of the wives definitely tells me they live more than comfortably.

Tegan and I are over at the bar while Sayeed shows Emersyn and Jaxon off to his extended family. We each order a soda. Given this is a Muslim family event, there’s no alcohol allowed.

“Not even wine?” Tegan groans through her teeth. “It’s practically a fruit…” She gives a thankful smile to the bartender and raises her glass in cheers before taking a sip of her Coke.

“Yeah, I don’t think it’s the grapes that are the issue...it’s the alcohol content.” I counter as I take my own sip of Dr. Pepper.

She shrugs indifferently. “Yeah, I guess. As long as I can dance, I’m happy.”

I eye the empty stage in the corner of the room where a few traditional Pakistani instruments are resting in front. I look back to where Jaxon is, noticing he’s deep in conversation with Sayeed and two other men as Emersyn starts to wander off.

I give him a couple seconds to realize. When he doesn’t, I hold a finger up to Tegan as she rambles on about wanting a henna tattoo before scurrying over to her.

I bend over as much as I can in my dress to lock eyes with Emersyn. “Hey, pretty. How about some apple juice?”

Emersyn gives me a heartwarming smile, the one that’s perfectly crafted in her father’s image. She reaches her arms up for me to lift her, so I grip her under her arms.

Just as I settle her on my hip, the sound of loud drums pierces my ears, causing Emersyn to cover hers and cringe. Lights start blinking and moving all over the dance floor, and I freeze, unaware of what the hell is happening.

Jaxon walks over to us and gestures for me to head back to the bar. “The bride and groom are about to walk in. Let’s stand back here.”

He rests his hand at the small of my back and guides us towards the bar. The banging of the drums gets louder as someone on a microphone says something upbeat in Urdu. The main door opens, and Abe enters in his traditional groom attire as everyone cheers.
